Read this paper later: procrastination with time-consistent preferences

چکیده

A model of time-consistent procrastination is developed to assess the extent to which the observed behavior is compatible with rational behavior. When a finite work requirement must be completed by a deadline, the remaining time for leisure is an exhaustible resource. With a positive rate of time preference, the optimal allocation of this resource results in more hours spent working (and fewer in leisure) the closer the deadline. Key qualitative findings of psychological studies of academic procrastination are consistent with the standard natural resource management principles implied by the model, when suitably adapted to task aversiveness, uncertainty, and multiple deadlines. However, quantitatively, the fully rational model appears to require an extremely high rate of time preference or elasticity of intertemporal substitution to generate serious procrastination; furthermore, it cannot explain undesired procrastination. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Procrastination , partial naivete , and behavioral welfare analysis

This paper has a dual purpose. First, I present a new modeling of partial naivete and apply this to procrastination. The decision maker is partially naive by perceiving that his current preferences may persist in the future. The behavioral implications of such partial naivete differ from those of related literature. Second, I suggest a general principle for welfare analysis in multi-self settin...

Why Don’t You Go to Bed on Time? A Daily Diary Study on the Relationships between Chronotype, Self-Control Resources and the Phenomenon of Bedtime Procrastination

Background: This daily diary study investigates the phenomenon of bedtime procrastination. Bedtime procrastination is defined as going to bed later than intended, without having external reasons for doing so. We highlight the role chronotype (interindividual differences in biological preferences for sleep-wake-times) plays for bedtime procrastination. Moreover, we challenge the view that bedtim...

Delay and Procrastination in Search

We develop a model of sequential search when the cost of searching in each period is stochastic and show that in this setting optimal search entails delay when the cost of searching is high. This characterizes the fact that search activity is often intermittent. Furthermore, we show that if an individual has present-biased preferences this will lead to procrastination, i.e. non-optimal delay th...

Sloan and Russell Sage Foundations for Financial Support

Though economists assume that intertemporal preferences are time-consistent, evidence suggests that a per-son's relative preference for well-being at an earlier moment over a later moment increases as the earlier moment gets closer. We explore the behavioral and welfare implications of such time-inconsistent preferences in a simple model where a person must engage in an activity exactly once du...
